Confronting the Shadow: How to Work with the Reversed Tarot Cards
Apr 20, 2025 8:37 PM

Reversed cards in shadow work may mean profound insights into aspects of the self that have been hidden. Reversals are often associated with blocked, internalized, or opposite energies of the upright position and can be fierce mirrors when addressing the shadow—the parts of ourselves we tend to avoid and deny.

Traditional tarot readings often place the meaning of a card in reverse as describing problems, obstacles, or delays in place of the upright meaning of the card.Shadow work deepens this even further, as it is an indication of internal battles and emotions that remain unresolved or evidence of negative patterns. Reversed cards often reflect places that have probably kept you from growing. They shine light on everything that's being buried deep down inside of you, giving you a chance to confront them head-on.

Common Reversed Cards in Shadow Work

  • The Fool Reversed: This may indicate a fear of leaping into things or even recklessness. In shadow work, it will nudge you to discover what prevents you from taking risks or trusting the unknown.
  • The Lovers Reversed: Most often, pointing towards relationship problems or self-love, it nudges you to scrutinize unhealthy patterns in your relationships with others or with yourself.
  • The Tower Reversed: This card questions whether you are avoiding necessary change. This resistance to transformation might be leading to a longer period of discomfort and the appearance of this card signals the need to face turmoil for personal growth.
  • One way to work with reversed tarot cards is by acknowledging what resistance or negative emotion these bring to you. Journal them by viewing these feelings and what, perhaps, fear or memory they may induce. Tarot spreads about introspection often include "What am I avoiding" or "What internal issues must I confront" In many ways, these kinds of spreads will help you discover hidden wounds and lead you to healing.

Ultimately, reversed cards in shadow work are not something to fear but those that you should embrace because they show the clearest view of what needs to be done for personal transformation.
