Reading Tarot for Others: Ethical Guidelines and Best Practices
Apr 20, 2025 3:15 PM

Reading tarot for others is a very powerful way to offer guidance and insight, yet great responsibility goes hand-in-hand with it. Ethical guidelines and good practices help ensure you approach each reading with integrity, respect, and compassion and provide a safe, supportive environment for the querent.

1. Establish Clear Boundaries

First of all, set boundaries before; for instance you must let them know that it is a tool for reflection and insight rather than something to predict the future and certainly not something to make key decisions based on, especially if the decision is for the benefit of someone else. In other words, indicate that the cards guide you but the choice to make is still yours. This would stop over-reliance on the cards and empower the person to take responsibility for their life.

2. Respect Privacy

It can be said that the essence of readings lies in confidentiality. Treat all communications with the querent in privacy and regard them as personal matters. Their vulnerability to express themselves in an open space without fear of judgment makes the querent rely on you. Always seek permission when handling sensitive matters.

3. Avoid Reading for Third Parties

You should not be reading for someone who is not in attendance or who does not know that they are involved in a reading. The tighter the focus and intent of the querent, the better the results when it comes to himself and finding an answer within the reading. In general, reading about others without them being privy to it is a privacy violation, and other people's readings often are incomplete and misleading.

4. Be Gentle with Your Words

Tarot readers should be compassionate in presenting delicate issues. They should know how to relay information and make sure they do not sound too harsh or as if they are stating something fatal, but rather help the querent by putting the receiving information into perspective about how to work through challenges.

5. Know Your Limits

Know your limitations as a reader. Tarot is a tool for spiritual advice, not for therapy, legal advice, or medical treatment. Be clear with clients to seek professional advice where needed and to view tarot readings as augmentative, not a replacement, of expert opinion.
