What Is The Real Meaning Behind Tarot's The Devil

The Devil is one of the more provocative cards in the deck, belonging to the Major Arcana. It typically is very emotionally charged and is a meditative card dealing with temptations, materialism, and personal bonds. Normally, it is portrayed as a horned figure that represents primal instincts and desires and the dark sides of the human mind. In either stance, the upright or reversed position, the Devil dares you to face what holds you back from freedom.

The upright Devil’s appearance is that of being caught up in addiction and its entrapment. It could imply being chained to unhealthy habits or relationships and materialistic pursuits in your life. This card suggests you come back and observe how you normally feel powerless or become highly reliant upon external conditions for happiness. The upright Devil advises you to scrutinize your desires and attachments as it may lead you away from being yourself.

This card also talks about the seductive nature of temptation. It can be pleasurable, but it always has a price: perhaps nudging you to reevaluate your choices and where they lie in your long-term values. The upright Devil reminds you that, that which can entice you- physically or materially- can enslave you if left unchecked. Human beings are not free in what they do because they are not free in what they want, such is the meaning of this card.

The reversed Devil represents freedom and breaking the chains that trap you. It shows that you're dealing with the fears and needs chained to you, and through this, you might feel liberation. It tells you that you're conquering addictions and toxic relationships or that you are taking back your personal power and freedom. The reversed Devil reminds you to embrace this journey of self-discovery and growth.

Most of all, the Devil is a card of warning. It also tells you to be careful, to not slide back into old patterns. The reversed Devil cautions you to watch out for any lingering temptation that will otherwise impact your journey forward. In either case- upright or reversed- the Devil is a red flag that dares you to confront your demons and step forward into real freedom and be your most authentic self.
