Have you ever viewed the splendor of a glistening meteor shower?
Meteors are space rocks that sometimes enter our atmosphere, causing a visual spectacle of lights that resemble shooting stars. But have you ever thought about the effect this natural phenomenon might have on us astrologically?
While meteors are much smaller and have less influence over us than planets, they still create energy in the atmosphere that has the potential to affect us – especially those meteors that recur on a regular basis.
Meteor showers may not have a traditional place in astrology as we know it today, but they were considered particularly powerful to ancient astrologers.
Today, we’re going to take a deeper look into meteor showers, their meaning, and how they tie into the world of astrology.
One of the astrological meanings of meteor showers is change and transformation. Much like a New Moon or Lunar eclipse, meteor showers bring in new energy and encourage us to look forward to new and exciting experiences in life.
That means that not only is a meteor shower a good time to take a blanket and a bottle of wine outside and watch the spectacular view, but it is also a good time for manifestation and dreaming up new desires for your future self.
Ancient Greek astronomer, Ptolemy, suggested that meteors were the result of the gods peering open the veil between their world and ours to look down upon us, allowing shooting stars to fly through the gap.
Other Ancient Greeks believed that there were human souls trapped in the vessel of shooting stars and that wishing upon them was a lucky act.
There are many myths and superstitions surrounding shooting stars. For instance, it has been said that a shooting star appearing to the right of your body indicates good luck approaching, while a shooting star on the left may signal a more negative omen.
It is also thought that the first shooting star spotted during a meteor shower is infused with a unique kind of magic, making it the most potent star to make a wish upon.
There are even nursery rhymes dedicated to the tradition of wishing upon a star:
Starlight, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may; I wish I might,
Have this wish I wish tonight.

During this shower, one can see anywhere from 60 to 100 meteors in a single hour. This meteor shower is named after the constellation that the meteors appear from, Perseus, the ancient Greek who killed Medusa, the snake-headed monster.
This particular meteor shower encourages you to let go of fear and move on from past trauma. During this shower, it’s a good time to wish for your mental and emotional wellness.
This meteor shower is named for the constellation Draco the Dragon, and the meteors themselves are the result of debris leftover from the Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner.
Draco is connected to the dragon of Hesperides, who guarded the garden’s golden apples. Draco provides artistic, creative energy, but it is also rather somber energy.
During the Draconid showers, this is a time to gather your fierce strength – breathe the same fire that the dragon breathes. Even if you’re feeling melancholy, make a wish for your true and courageous nature to be revealed.
Because meteors take place in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, they do not inherently connect to the archetypal significance of your natal chart.
However, that doesn’t mean that shooting stars don’t hold their own astrological significance in our lives. There’s a reason why we wish upon shooting stars – it’s a time of promise, of change, of new beginnings, and of manifesting our deepest desires.
The next meteor shower with wishing potential will be the Geminids, occurring from December 4th to December 17th – with peak nights being the 13th and 14th of the month. This is the time to take a cozy blanket and a notebook outside, sit down with your wishes, and wait for the shooting stars to appear.
The next time you see a shooting star, remember its significance, close your eyes, and make a wish.
