The Significance of Outer Planets in Astrology
Jan 11, 2025 4:56 PM

Planets play a pivotal role in defining characteristics of different signs in astrology. The extent to their strength is measured by Earth’s axis and rotation and its distance to each of the planets of the solar system. Inner planets, like the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and Venus are closer to us and hence have a more frequent, visible influence on our day-to-day activities and experiences. However, the outer planets move very slowly through their axes and sway generational trends, spanning even decades.

The outer planets hold different meanings. What are they

  • Jupiter: Jupiter is known as a benevolent giant. It expands horizons, brings luck, growth and wisdom. It’s influence spans across 12 months to 13 months, touching entire generations.
  • Saturn: Saturn teaches discipline and guides fear. It does present challenges but it’s in the grand scheme of things, these challenges aim to shape you better for your future. It’s orbit of almost 2-3 years per sign shapes extremely long-term structures.
  • Uranus: Uranus, a rebel, is said to herald change and originality. It’s orbit spans 7 years and hence, it oversees the upheaval of root foundations and the change of societal norms. It precedes the age of innovation, each time better than the last.
  • Neptune: Neptune goes through signs every 10 to 12 years. This isn’t just impactful on an individual conscience, but the conscience of an entire generation. It forms the ideals of the generation of those who are born under it, making them imaginative and creative.
  • Pluto, though not a planet—or a ‘dwarf’ planet—operates on an even grander scale. Its status remains potent in astrology, as it dismantles and rebuilds all that it may in the 12-15 years it takes to transit a sign. It symbolises power and metamorphosis.
  • There are even some significant aspects to these, which in Astrology refers to the connection of planets to each other, in relation to your birth chart. The outer planets that shape individual lives and societal currents can be observed like this:

  • Jupiter Trine Sun: At a 120°-degree aspect, it combines the expansive nature of Jupiter with the self-expressive energy of the Sun. It signifies personal growth, optimism and success. Individuals with this aspect often have a positive outlook on life and attract abundant opportunities.
  • Saturn Square moon: This aspect, a 90° square between Saturn and the Moon suggests restrictions and emotional maturity. Childhood experiences, for instance, may have been alienating and contributed to deep insecurities. It can feel isolating, but it can always leave the room open for lessons in resilience and responsibility.
  • Uranus Opposition Mercury: When Uranus opposes Mercury at a 180° angle, mental activity accelerates leading to sudden insights. Unpredictability in communication and tension between logic and intuition can be recorded, when regarding the tumultuous nature of Uranus with Mercury.
  • Neptune Conjunct Venus: Neptune aligns closely with Venus, merging dreamy and sensual energies. It idealises love, beauty and creativity. In relationships, it blurs reality and sets people up, sometimes, for disillusionment. It also increases drive for artistic endeavours and perception of beauty.
  • Pluto Sextile Ascendant: When Pluto forms a sextile aspect with the Ascendant in a birth chart, it leads to some particularly intense auras. For example, the sign Scorpio is ruled by Pluto. Those with Scorpios in their ascendants and a paired Pluto sextile aspect are going to be some of the most magnetic people you will ever meet. People are naturally drawn to them, sensing their power and depth and desire for transformation.
  • There are many other ways that these signs can be read into and understood for a clearer look at how the generation you live in is coming to impact you, and how you can make a change in the world. This is what marks the significance of the outer planets, as it outlines the final layer of understanding yourself. Not just from within, not just from without, but as an individual part of a grand collective. A speck of dust in time—but you get to decide its colour.
