Have you ever heard of the astrology Vertex? If you’ve been looking into spiritual astrology or anything with compatibility, you probably have since that’s generally what the Vertex connects to.
The Vertex also has an exactly opposite position called the Anti-Vertex. It exactly opposes the Vertex in the zodiac, making this an axis in astrology.
The Astrological Vertex is a position that some astrologers swear by, and others barely pay attention to. It’s not a physical body and is instead the point where the ecliptic and prime vertical intersect.
In case you have no clue what those words mean, the ecliptic is essentially the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. The prime vertical is the circle passing east and west through the zenith and nadir of a location. The west spot is the Vertex while the east spot is the Anti-Vertex.
I absolutely recommend using an online calculator to calculate your Vertex location (it’s way too difficult for anyone who isn’t an astrologer or mathematician to do by hand, and luckily there are plenty of free calculators online that will calculate your Vertex for you).
Just like when it comes to calculating your birth chart, you will need your full birth date, including your time of birth, as well as the location wherein you were born.
The Vertex is usually located in the 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th houses in your birth chart (the axis can be closer to your Imum Coeli and Midheaven if you were born in tropical latitudes). This part of your chart connects to others, so the Vertex is sometimes seen as a second Descendant.
In the astrological houses, your Vertex means different things:
In the 5th house, you may be fated to fall in love fast and be big on romance. In the 6th house, you may be fated to be of service to others. In the 7th house, you may be fated to prioritize relationships and be in the middle. In the 8th house, you may be fated to transform via love and be passionate. The zodiac sign location of your astrology Vertex tends to be more important than the house though.

In synastry, the Vertex is considered almost like a part of the Primal Triad (Sun, Moon, Ascendant), and you can see connections with people who have a natal planet conjunct your Vertex or Anti-Vertex.
In the composite chart, the Vertex can be strong with those you have a fated connection with, often conjunct a composite planet, angle, or Lunar Nodes.
The conjunctions do usually need to be close (under two degrees) because this isn’t a physical body. It’s not enough to just be in the same zodiac sign (it must be close!).

But you do need to remember something – “fated” doesn’t equal “positive and healthy”! We’re destined to meet many people and have many relationships that aren’t good for us, so sometimes those connections aren’t positive, but may have something to teach us.
Don’t have rose-colored glasses with the Vertex!
Transits and progressions can trigger timing for encounters and events that feel fated. When a transit planet conjuncts your natal Vertex or Anti-Vertex, this can bring energy for something or someone fated.
The Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars all move quickly and conjunct both 2-4+ times each year, so it may not be a big deal when they conjunct unless it’s paired with other transits.
The Moon moves fastest and conjuncts both every month, but this only lasts for a few hours so it generally isn’t enough to trigger anything unless other big astrology is present.
It’ll be a much bigger deal when its transit Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto conjunct your Vertex or Anti-Vertex. Then it tends to be very strong!
You’ll want to focus on the energy of the transit planet involved and the sign your Vertex or Anti-Vertex is in—this can give clues as to how it happens or what it involves.
Your progressed chart can also trigger with progressed planets or house cusps conjunct your natal Vertex, or with your progressed Vertex conjunct one of your natal planets. This can be as strong as when the slow transit planets are conjunct.
Progressions can also be used with relationship astrology, and sometimes fated people will connect your progressed Vertex (or you with theirs).
The astrology Vertex can be an interesting and fun position to play around with. You may be especially interested if any of the slow planets are conjuncting your Vertex or Anti-Vertex, or you have progressions in play, this year – pay attention!
